Position Title: Building Maintenance Technician

Location: Second Unitarian Church of Chicago

Type: 11 Hours Per Week/$25 per hour (additional compensation for outside events) We are open to this being an independent contract position or a fully employed position. We are also open to a team or small business. The position is on-site with weekend and evening requirements

Second Unitarian Church (2U), a progressive, inclusive, and engaged congregation in Chicago, IL, is seeking a part time, non-exempt Building Maintenance Technician. Our Unitarian Universalist congregation is explicitly (if imperfectly) anti-racist/anti-oppressive, LGBTQ+ affirming, multigenerational, multicultural, and theologically diverse faith community.

Briefly, we are a 200+-member congregation of Unitarian Universalists that has been chartered in Chicago, IL since 1857. We have one full-time minister, a ministerial intern, and director of administration. a part-time director of faith development, a part-time music director, a very part-time A/V digital tech producer, and childcare workers. More information about our church can be found on our website.

Position Summary:
The Building Maintenance Technician is an essential player for our congregational needs. In 11 hours per week, this person is responsible for cleaning the building, moving and organizing chairs, regular maintenance (such as replacing air filters), and resolving minor “fix-it” needs in the building in addition to other duties assigned that fit within compensated hours of work.

Qualifications:

  • Attention to detail and safety needs

  • Capacity to lift 50 pounds

  • Ability to safely work from a ladder 

  • Punctuality and quick response to requests for maintenance and moving

  • Flexibility with schedule

  • Minor building repair skills

  • Excellent communications skills with supervisor

Essential Functions:
Task area1-building cleaning (weekly)

  • Attend to all cleaning needs of the building twice weekly.

  • Empty all trash cans and ensure bags are replaced.

  • Clean all bathrooms: fixtures cleaned and sanitized, sinks cleaned and sanitized, floors cleaned and wet mopped with clean mop and sanitizer.

  • All kitchen areas cleaned: work surfaces cleaned and sanitized, entire area dusted, floor swept before being wet mopped with clean mop and sanitizer.

  • Hard floors swept before being wet mopped with clean mop and sanitizer. 

  • Vacuum and dust classrooms in the basement.

  • Trash cans rolled to street for pick-up.

Task area 2—maintenance work (as needed)

  • Change furnace filters on a monthly basis.

  • Perform minor repairs. Change light bulbs and tubes, fix leaky faucets, other repairs as needed.

  • Other similar tasks as requested.

  • Report to the Director of Administration any work beyond skillset.

  • Small plumbing, electrical, and technical work.

Task area 3-furniture re-setting (multiple times a month)

  • Organize and move furniture (primarily chairs) in the building based on illustrations shared by the Director of Administration.

  • Set up furniture for building use by space sharers and reset following their events (this will be done with additional compensation at $30 per hour).

Accessibility Note:

Please note that our building is currently not ADA compliant, but construction is underway to build an elevator and ramp, making us fully accessible, to be completed sometime in the Spring/Summer of 2025. Accessing the building, the basement, and our Loft area currently requires the ability to climb stairs.
