Fundraiser for Immigrant Rights
Join the Japanese American and broader Chicago community on Sunday, August 4th as we come together over delicious food and drink at Izakaya Mita, while raising money to get migrants out of detention and reunited with their loved ones. Izakaya Mita has generously agreed to donate 25% of all proceeds from restaurant sales that day to the 2019 Freedom Summer Fund, and we will also be asking for suggested donations of $5-20 for the fund.
While it took decades for the incarceration of Japanese people in the U.S. during World War II to be widely acknowledged as unjust and unnecessary, there were people from outside of the camps who spoke out against the incarceration, and who supported individuals and families in being released before the war ended, so they could continue their lives. Raising money to bail migrants out of detention is one way that we can make a difference for people who are being unjustly incarcerated today, often in horrific conditions.
Money in the 2019 Freedom Summer Fund is distributed to local immigration bond funds of the National Bail Fund Network to help quickly post bond for individuals in immigration detention, so they can reunite with their loved ones and work on their cases from a place of freedom. Every week, at least $200,000 worth of people’s bonds is on the network’s waiting list to be paid.
A short program on immigrant rights issues will be held at 5pm on the day of the event, but information about immigrant rights will be distributed throughout the day.
Izakaya Mita is located at 1960 North Damen Avenue, and reservations can be made at: https://www.opentable.com/r/izakaya-mita-chicago. Reservations are recommended, particularly in the evening.
Izakaya Mita is wheelchair accessible and single user gender neutral restrooms will be available.
This event is co-sponsored by Izakaya Mita, JACL-Chicago, the Japanese American Service Committee, and Asian Americans Advancing Justice-Chicago.
